The Hidden Value of Family Snaps

//The Hidden Value of Family Snaps

Local Studies volunteers have been working extremely hard this year, digitising our collection of photographs. After scanning, the images are edited, catalogued and uploaded to the Local Studies Gallery on the Busselton Libraries website. This is a time consuming process, but creates a fantastic resource for anyone interested in the history of the local area.

You can check the Gallery regularly for new additions, and search for photos in the Library Catalogue for detailed information about each image.

If you have photographs that you think may be of interest please contact the Local Studies Librarian. You may think that photos you have are just family snaps, but they could prove invaluable to researchers because of the background information in the photos.

Take for example the attached photo…

This photo depicting a street scene near Victoria Square in Busselton around 1945 can provide researchers with information about:

  • the types of vehicles used at the time
  • condition of the roads
  • the presence or lack of footpaths at that location
  • powerlines
  • vegetation
  • clothing and dress

And look! In the background you can see the Ballarat Engine.

Remember, you don’t have to part with family treasures; we are able to scan your photographs and return the originals to you along with a copy of the digitised images.
