Jameela was born in India in 1937 and married at 12 to a man at least 30 years older than her and who already had a wife and children. This is the story of Jameela’s struggle for independence and a sense of self in a country steeped in tradition and male domination.
The book kept me interested and gave an insight into India/Pakistan in the 1940’s and ‘50’s.
There is a great deal of repetition which was annoying and I felt, unnecessary; at times the grammar and westernised words appeared contrived.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book with all its faults.
