An adventurous historical fiction story with a dual timeline one hundred years apart. In 1920, Violet Mackenzie, is a headstrong young girl from a wealthy Scottish family who moves to Edinburgh to study gardening. After falling in love, her adventurous spirit finds her travelling to Kathmandu. The journals she kept are found by her family 100 years later in old trunks. And so begins the adventure of a lifetime for Daisy who seeks to discover where Violet travelled to and what became of her life.
This story is full of adventure, courage, and philosophy. Violet becomes the heroine of the story as she pushes aside family expectations. For example, it was often custom and encouraged for young daughters to marry for wealth rather than for love. Daisy is inspired by Violet’s courage and determination and even though there are many hurdles along the way, she jumps over every one of them and proves to herself that she too can bravely be herself.
I absolutely adored this book. It is so beautifully written and inspiring that it makes me want to travel to Nepal to find the valley of the flowers for myself.
