The Homemade God, by Rachel Joyce

Cover of The Homemade God, by Rachel Joyce.

Rachel Joyce is a favourite author of this reviewer, and this book does not disappoint, though the storyline is not as complex or nuanced as Miss Benson’s Beetle.

This is a story of family and sibling rivalry which revolve around their erratic and self-absorbed artist father who at the age of 76, marries a 27-year-old woman whom the family have never met. The climax arises when Vic is found drowned in the lake next to the holiday house in Italy, and the adult children arrive in Italy to confront the new wife.

As always, Joyce creates sympathetic and well-drawn characters, acutely observed as the conflicting relationships are uncovered. A compulsive page turner of a novel.
