Gravity Let Me Go, by Trent Dalton

Cover of Gravity Let Me Go, by Trent Dalton.

This is yet another crazy novel by the award-winning author of Boy of Swallows Universe and Lola in the Mirror.

This is an Australian story based in a picture-perfect suburb of Brisbane. The protagonist is the narrator, Noah, a husband and father to two teenage daughters. Noah is an up and coming journalist who fancies himself as a crime writer come journalist and publishes a book about a woman called, Tamsin, a wife and mother who goes missing from Brisbane and is presumed murdered, until now. Following the publishing of his book, Noah begins to receive notes in his mailbox with cryptic clues as to the whereabouts of Tamsin’s body.  Someone is leaving Noah clues to solve a case, a mad woman attempts to run him down, his wife appears to have a nervous breakdown, his father dies, and his daughter is kidnapped by a serial killer he has known for about 16 years.

This novel is a psychological thriller that contains violence, murder, and some explicit language. The author successfully debrides the serious nature of the story with some half-witted humour and a few laugh out loud laughs. I read it quickly over a few days, as I was eager to find out who the killer was. No spoilers here. The end was surprising and weird with lots of imaginary supernatural stuff thrown in.
