Benbecula, by Graeme Macrae Burnet

Cover of Benbecula, by Graeme Macrae Burnet.

The acclaimed author of His Bloody Project and Case Study joins the Darkland Tales series with a fictionalised account of a real-life triple murder on the eponymous Hebridean Island and its subsequent aftermath.

In 1857, a 25-year-old labourer named Angus MacPhee bludgeoned to death his parents and aunt in the crofting community on the remote Hebridean island of Benebecula. Five years later, Angus’ older brother Malcolm recounts the events leading up to the murders while trying to keep a grip on his own sanity. Malcolm is ostracised by the community and haunted by this gruesome episode in his past, but is he as innocent as he seems?

The story has excellent prose, and it keeps you guessing.
