Cora and her 9-year-old daughter go to the registry office to register her newborn son’s name. The husband expects it to be his name Gordon; however, Cora chooses the name Julian. The novel continues as it follows the three different lives that would have occurred from three different names. Cora is a victim of terrible mental and physical domestic violence from her well respected town husband who is a local GP. The three different names generate a very different lifelong outcome for the family.
Trigger warning for those affected by family domestic violence. There are some very difficult to read scenes. Although I liked Florence’s writing, I didn’t like the sliding door type structure of the story myself as I felt there was no time for the characters to develop properly to understand the storylines. A bit difficult to keep track of who is who.
The novel has received mix reviews online. Most people liked it, calling it “thought provoking and creative.”
