Gloria Don’t Speak, by Lucy Apps

Cover of Gloria Don't Speak, by Lucy Apps.

This is a carefully structured narrative that intensifies in impact and tension as the novel progresses. Gloria feels incredibly real because you experience it from her perspective. She has a disability and is non-verbal. You can feel her frustration, confusion, and exhaustion as people constantly ask why she “can’t speak” instead of actually trying to understand her. She experiences verbal and physical abuse and there is a lot of tension throughout. The novel captures how difficult it is for her to connect with others and communicate what she needs. Her vulnerability and naivety are foremost in your fear for her. It’s well written and it stays with you long after reading it.
