This story is the long awaited fourth book in the series, ‘The Elements’. The main topic in all of the series is child sex abuse.
The main protagonist Aaron, ex-husband, to Rebecca and father to Emmett, his 14-year-old son. Aaron and Emmitt are taking a trip back to Ireland to meet Rebecca after the passing of her mother. Along the way Aaron and Emmitt connect in ways like never before, as Aaron slowly unravels the tales of their lives and the reasons behind the sad family separation. Aaron wants nothing more than to protect his son from becoming a victim like himself at this age. There is a lovely long awaited re-connection between the members of this family.
This book is almost like closure for the other elements. A resolution that emanates some kind of peace after all of the other books. Each of the four books tells a sad tale of child sex abuse, and the third story reaches a high point of tension in the series, with this book seeking to resolve that feeling. I feel like what John is trying to say is that after all the worst things that can happen, it is possible to find some peace and happiness and hope for the future. The key is honesty and acceptance, and talking about it, which for most people, is the hardest thing to do. I love the way John made it feel peaceful and a message of hope for the future.
