This incredible historical fiction novel set in the ninth-century Europe is based on the legend of Pope Joan, a said-to-be mythical story. Agnes is a young motherless girl, daughter of a priest. At eighteen, to avoid a future as a wife or nun, Agnes enlists the help of a lovesick Benedictine monk to disguise herself as a man and devote her life of the study of God that she is denied as a woman.
Very well researched and beautifully written. The title is perfect for this novel.
