Detective Jimmy Perez is now living in Orkney with his former boss and current partner, Willow, and their son. Willow is on maternity leave, preparing to give birth to their second child. Perez is soon drawn into the lives of the islanders when one stormy winter night his oldest and closest friend, Archie Stout, goes missing. Jimmy Perez catches a boat to the island of Westray, where Archie worked as a farmer and lived with his wife and children.
Perez finds Archie’s body on an archaeological dig site and an unusual murder weapon is found discarded nearby, a Neolithic stone, bearing ancient inscriptions. But Perez is so close to the case that he struggles to maintain an objective distance from the potential suspects. Willow takes over the investigation on Westray while Jimmy follows leads in Kirkwall, the largest town in Orkney. As the investigation goes on two more murders occur. All are tied somehow to the archaeological history of Westray.
