Vampire Squid, by Prema Arasu

Cover of Vampire Squid, by Prema Arasu.

For three years, Prema Arasu was a Humanities based postdoctoral research fellow at the Minderoo-UWA Deep Sea Research Centre. As a Humanities based researcher, she explored the relationship between humans and the ocean and the worldwide need for a much higher level of stewardship and kinship with the ocean if we wish to save the oceans of the world from destruction by humans.

This is a book of poetry, quite exquisite in its beauty even though it often expresses ideas, sentiments and realities far from our concept of beauty. The poems vary in form and length, but each one gives a vivid picture of the world of the deepest oceans, the people privileged to work in that world, a world very few of we lesser mortals are ever destined to experience.

If you consider poetry is not your metier, challenge yourself and read this book written in verse. It is lucid. It is descriptive. It is at times somewhat vitriolic. It is fascinating
