The River We Remember, by William Kent Krueger

Cover of The River we Remember, by William Kent Krueger.

Set in the 1950’s, a small Minnesota town is rocked by the murder of a wealthy landowner, Jimmy Quinn. The main character, Sheriff Brody Dern is in charge of the investigation. He, like all the characters is a complex individual, struggling with his own demons from the past. Suspicion falls on a Native American WWII veteran, and the town, with its share of rednecks, teeters on the edge of violence.

This is both a spellbinding mystery and a good hard look at the prejudices held by ordinary people in an ordinary town.
