You are Here, by David Nicholls

I enjoyed this British author’s first two novels, but I found this novel disappointing.

Basically, a love story between two midlife characters, both lonely and recovering from failed marriages. As the title suggests, the couple are undertaking a long and challenging walk in the north of England initially in the company of mutual friends, but eventually on their own together.

There was a lot of humorous touches and sharp observation, but I found the storyline to be too slow and I couldn’t empathise with the protagonists. However, it is a light and easy to read novel which illustrates the complex manoeuvres which middle aged couples must negotiate to form relationships in the twenty-first century.
