Inconvenient Women, by Jacqueline Kent

Cover of Inconvenient Women, by Jacqueline Kent.

This book explores Australian, radical, women writers from shortly before Federation until 1970.  It introduces key figures such as Dame Mary Gilmore and Katharine Susannah Prichard, who wrote for and about women in Australia’s formative decades.  These women were suffragists, feminists (even before the word existed), socialists, and/or communists, writing about issues such as women’s rights, the treatment of Aboriginal people, and the rights of workers.

I found this book absolutely fascinating.  I am embarrassed to say I did not already know about more of these women whose stories captivated me.  Their strength and courage is inspirational and their forward-thinking was incredible.  Because these women often interacted with key moments of Australian history, it was also fascinating to learn more about our history from a perspective we do not often encounter.
