The Bewitching, by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

This book follows three women in three different decades – each new chapter switches between stories.  Despite living in different eras, and one in a different country, they are all encountering similar experiences.  The protagonist is a PhD candidate in New England, while the other stories are one her grandmother told her about witches and the other is an unpublished memoir by the author that she is writing her thesis on.

I am not normally a fan of the horror genre.  I do not find the events in horror books chilling and often get bored.  Despite that, I still found this an interesting mystery and an enjoyably written story.  I imagine horror fans would enjoy it even more than I did.  Like any good mystery, I spent every chapter trying to guess what was really happening and who was behind it all.  Like any good mystery reveal, I guessed some bits right and some bits wrong.  The writing was easy to read and highly accessible, which helped keep things slowing smoothly.
