Library Staff Recommendation
The novel starts with a young woman at Uni in Broken Hill. After attacking an ex in her sleep, and plagued by bizarre nightmares, she flees to her sister’s house. She arrives in a small, coastal town that has its fair share of mysteries, and finds she just missed her sister. Investigating her own mysteries, the mysteries of the town, and her own sister’s background, we gradually piece together strange and uncomfortable truths.
I found this book difficult to put down. The style and themes were similar to Hart’s debut novel, Weyward, but I felt the pacing was a lot stronger in The Sirens. I did prefer the chapters that focused on the protagonist over the chapters of her dreams, but those dreams were critical to understanding what was really happening.
The way the various storied gradually unfolded and eventually connected together captured my attention, and my imagination. I was also trying to piece together what was happening alongside the protagonist. Well worth reading for fans of magical realism.
