Return to Valetto, by Dominic Smith

Cover of Return to Valetto, by Dominic Smith.

At the core it is a story about family connections, the effect of past experiences and the risks of the outcome of a gathering to celebrate a matriarch’s 100th birthday. The descriptions of rural northern Italian villages are captivating, as are details of nature and traditional food.

The village is almost deserted, and the War affected their lives, some sadly and dramatically. I really liked this book. The narrative is in first person, an historian, and so lots of reflection on times past.
